Basement Drywall Cost 2026: Sheets, Board Types & Calculator
Basement drywall prices, board types and sheet math.
Part of these guide hubs
Drywall in a basement isn't quite the same job as upstairs. Concrete walls sweat, ceilings are full of pipes and ducts, and many codes want fire-rated board near the furnace. Plan for that and the job goes smoothly. In 2026, most homeowners pay $2.00–$3.50 per square foot of board to have basement drywall hung, taped and finished.
Basement drywall cost in 2026
- Materials only: $0.60–$1.00 per sq ft (mold-resistant board costs about 40% more than standard)
- Hang, tape and finish labor: $1.50–$2.50 per sq ft on walls, more on ceilings
- A 750 sq ft basement with ceiling (about 2,000 sq ft of board): roughly $4,500–$7,000 installed
- Soffits around ducts and beams: add $15–$30 per linear foot
Which board to use below grade
- Mold-resistant (paperless or purple board) for all exterior walls — the safe default
- Fire-rated 5/8 in Type X around furnaces, under stairs and where local code asks
- Never set drywall directly on concrete: leave a 1/2 in gap at the floor
How to count sheets
Add up the wall area (perimeter × height), add the ceiling if you're covering it, then add 10–15% for cuts. Divide by 32 for 4x8 sheets or 48 for 4x12 sheets. Plan one 5-gallon bucket of mud for every 450 sq ft.

How much does it cost to drywall a basement?
Most 2026 US basements cost $4,000–$9,000 to drywall, or $2.00–$3.50 per sq ft of board installed.
Do I need mold-resistant drywall in a basement?
It's strongly recommended on exterior walls and often required by local code.
Should I drywall or use a drop ceiling?
Drywall looks cleaner and costs less; a drop ceiling keeps pipes and shutoffs easy to reach.
