Remodeling a basement that's already finished is a different job from finishing bare concrete. The framing, wiring and drywall are usually there, so you're paying to update, rearrange or tear out what an earlier owner built. In 2026 most US homeowners spend $15,000 to $55,000, and the scope you choose matters more than the size of the room.

Basement remodel cost by scope (2026)

  • Cosmetic refresh — paint, new LVP or carpet, LED lights: $12–$25 per sq ft
  • Mid-range update — new ceiling, trim, doors, some walls moved: $30–$45 per sq ft
  • Full gut remodel — strip to studs and rebuild: $50–$75 per sq ft plus demolition
  • Update an existing basement bathroom: $6,000–$12,000
  • Add a new basement bathroom: $15,000–$30,000 (more if a sewage pump is needed)

For an 800 sq ft basement, that works out to about $14,000 for a refresh, $30,000–$36,000 for a mid-range update and $50,000–$65,000 for a full gut remodel.

Remodel or refresh? A quick test

  • Musty smell, stained drywall or past flooding: plan a gut so you can fix moisture first
  • Dated but dry and sound: a refresh gives the most value per dollar
  • Layout doesn't work (no bedroom, awkward stairs): mid-range with targeted wall changes

Costs people forget

  • Bringing old, unpermitted work up to code once walls are open
  • Egress windows ($3,000–$5,500 each) if you want a legal bedroom
  • Upgrading heat and dehumidification so the space stays comfortable
  • Hauling away old carpet, drywall and paneling
