Kitchen Flooring Cost 2026: Best Materials and Installed Prices

Kitchen floors take spills, dropped pans and standing water. Here is what each material costs installed in 2026 and which ones survive.

Kitchen flooring is a durability decision first and a cost decision second. Whatever you pick lives under a dishwasher that will eventually leak, a fridge that gets dragged out, and a sink area that stays damp. That narrows the honest shortlist more than the price list does.

Kitchen Flooring Cost Per Square Foot, Installed (2026)

  • Sheet vinyl: $5-$8
  • Laminate: $6.50-$9.50
  • Luxury vinyl plank (LVP/SPC): $7-$11
  • Engineered hardwood: $12-$18
  • Solid hardwood: $15-$22
  • Porcelain tile: $14-$22

What a Typical Kitchen Costs

A 14 x 12 kitchen is 168 square feet. In LVP that is roughly $1,400-$1,900 installed including demo and underlayment; in porcelain tile, $2,600-$3,700; in solid hardwood, $2,800-$3,900.

Which Material Suits Which Kitchen

  • LVP: best all-round pick — waterproof, warm underfoot, forgiving on uneven subfloors.
  • Porcelain tile: longest life and best for radiant heat, but hard on backs and dropped glassware.
  • Engineered hardwood: the look of wood with better dimensional stability than solid.
  • Solid hardwood: fine if the rest of the floor already is, and you can refinish it later.
  • Laminate: cheapest respectable option, but check for a waterproof core rating.
Whatever you choose, run it under the dishwasher opening — a floor that stops at the appliance traps you at replacement time.

Costs People Forget

  1. Old floor removal: $2-$4 per sq ft, more if it is glued tile over concrete.
  2. Subfloor levelling: $1.50-$4 per sq ft where the existing floor deflects.
  3. Toe kick and transition trim: $180-$350.
  4. Appliance disconnect and reset: $150-$350.
  5. Door undercutting where the new floor sits higher: $25-$60 per door.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best flooring for a kitchen in 2026?

Luxury vinyl plank for most homes — it is waterproof, comfortable to stand on and costs about half of tile installed. Porcelain tile wins on longevity.

How much does kitchen flooring cost?

A typical 150-200 sq ft kitchen runs $1,300-$2,100 in LVP and $2,400-$4,000 in tile or hardwood, installed.

Should flooring go under kitchen cabinets?

For floating floors, no — run to the cabinet toe kick. For tile and glued-down floors, running under cabinets is fine and makes future layout changes easier.
