Kitchen Remodel Timeline 2026: Week-by-Week Schedule

On-site work is four to six weeks. The calendar version is usually ten to sixteen. Here's exactly where the extra time goes.

Homeowners plan around the construction window and get blindsided by the part before it. Design, cabinet ordering and permitting eat more calendar than demolition and installation combined.

The Realistic Kitchen Timeline

  1. Weeks 1–3: design, measurements, selections locked
  2. Weeks 2–4: permit application and plan review (varies wildly by city)
  3. Weeks 3–10: cabinet manufacturing and delivery — the single longest lead item
  4. Week 1 on site: demolition and disposal
  5. Week 2: rough plumbing, electrical, HVAC adjustments, inspection
  6. Week 3: drywall, paint, flooring
  7. Week 4: cabinet installation and countertop templating
  8. Weeks 5–6: countertop fabrication and install, backsplash, appliances, plumbing trim, final inspection

Lead Times That Set Your Start Date

  • Stock cabinets: 1–3 weeks
  • Semi-custom cabinets: 5–9 weeks
  • Custom cabinets: 10–16 weeks
  • Quartz countertops after template: 8–14 days
  • Specialty appliances: 4–20 weeks
Do not demolish anything until the cabinets are physically in your garage.

Price the scope you're scheduling before you book trades.

Where Schedules Slip

  • Inspection scheduling backlogs: 3–10 days each
  • Change orders after rough-in: 1–2 weeks
  • Hidden conditions — old wiring, rotted subfloor, undersized service panel: 3–14 days
  • Countertop remakes from a bad template: 2 weeks

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

Four to six weeks of on-site work for a same-layout replacement, and roughly ten to sixteen weeks total once design, permits and cabinet lead times are counted.

Can I live at home during a kitchen remodel?

Most people do. Set up a temporary kitchen with the fridge, microwave and a sink elsewhere, and budget for eating out during the dust-heavy weeks.

What is the longest part of a kitchen remodel?

Cabinet manufacturing. Custom orders regularly run ten to sixteen weeks and dictate the entire schedule.
